Volunteer Appreciation

I have been the recipient of love and service, therefore I can love and serve. There is great satisfaction in service to others, in ... seeing people and their conditions change. --Clarence E. Hodges

The Community Table would not, and could not, meet its serving potential in the community without our volunteers. You are very special and much appreciated. We know that while volunteering is not about personal gain, it is important to give respect and appreciation where it is due. Read more...

Volunteer Job Descriptions:

Potential Volunteers

To those who are considering being a volunteer, the following will give you an idea of what is involved. What we cannot convey here is the sense of satisfaction that you will enjoy from your service to your neighbors. We will not deny that there is some work involved. However, except for the task of restocking shelves, it is not strenuous. Review the job descriptions and decide which one(s) best match your skills and interests.

Active Volunteers

To those who have volunteered for a specific job, we are indeed grateful. Carefully read the job description for what you will be doing. You will be both more competent and confident if you do. If there is anything you do not understand, be prepared to ask questions when you arrive.

The service we provide is two fold...serving food and helping our clients to feel good about their visit to The Community Table. Your attitude and attention to detail will add to their experience. Come dressed in neat, clean clothes, properly groomed, wearing comfortable shoes. A good attitude is important to providing good service in a friendly and helpful manner. If you have long hair, it should be adequately restrained to prevent hair falling on the food you are preparing or delivering to a client.

Remember you will be preparing, serving or working in a food service environment.

Some of the following instructions apply to all jobs related to food preparation and service. They include:

1. If you volunteer to work at The Community Table please consider it a commitment. We schedule staff each day to provide a reasonable work load for all volunteers. If one person does not show up, others will have to pick up the load. This places stress on the others and results in a deterioration of service to our clients. If it becomes impossible for you to be present, please try to find a substitute. At minimum, call as early as possible to permit adjustments to be made. Please consider your commitment to be the entire time of your shift unless specifically arranged to be otherwise.

2. As soon as you arrive, provide the information required on the sign up sheet. Follow the instructions on the sheet. Before you leave at the end of the shift, record the hours you worked. This is very important as the information is used when applying for grants to help support the Table.

3. Wash your hands thoroughly, scrubbing them front and back and between the fingers, drying them with a paper towel. Be sure nails are clean before starting to scrub. This should be done when you first arrive, after any visit to the toilet, after sneezing or blowing your nose, and after doing any task that might result in your hands becoming unsterile. Some of our clients are especially susceptible to disease or unsterile matter. We must be very careful that we do not expose them to any condition that might threaten their well being. Similarly, some of our clients may come with colds or the like. Thus, you must be sure that you practice very good hygiene habits for your own protection.
